A beautiful destination for a week-long break! The more you want to relax the more you want to explore - that's Andamans for you. Most of the places are untouched by human invasion but the places that are, there's enough justice done.
The beaches are heavenly and the sands are so fine. You jus feel like sipping a coconut and relax on the hammock forever! The Thihar jail is something one shouldnt miss at any cost if you visit this land. You'll truly stand there and gaze at those dungeon like cells with heavy iron gates which are just mastery at work. You cannot get past those locks cos they are latched within the walls outside - amazing craftsmanship I should say, but YES its heart wrenching to image about 30 people cluttered in it, in a mere 4.5x2.7 meters cell, with a single ventilator 3 meters high. Gruesome! Originally there were seven wings in the shape of a bicycle wheel spoke, with a central tower. They are 3 stories high and contained 698 cells in all. My eyes filled as I went through the names of hundreds of freedom fighters inscribed on the walls of the tower, where a massive bell hangs.
Today, three wings have been demolished and have made way for a hospital. A visit to rest of the wings will give you an indication of the horrors of confinement. No modes of escape, nothing! It stands as a national memorial now, and a sound and light show on the freedom struggle is conducted every evening (which I terribly missed
). So much for the loss of hundreds of human lives!
Ross Island, Chidiya Tapu, Coral Island, Mount Harriet, Gandhi Park are just few in the list of ‘must visits’. A place worthy of mention is Chatham Saw Mill at Chatham Island. This island houses Asia’s largest saw mill! Yes, the largest! This is definitely an interesting find and if you have a guide along, you may request him to take you on a short tour around the place.
I’m surely missing out on a lot of places I had visited, thanks to my memory but my strong suggestion is to visit this place in leisure and explore this beautiful island. You will be filled with absolute admiration. I was lucky enough to have visited the islands before the great Tsunami struck. I was told that the damage done was colossal!
